Kathryn Carey Strom, age 71, of Westhampton, NY and Palm Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024. The eldest daughter of the late Mary Frances and J. Paul Carey Jr., she is survived by her devoted husband Michael F. Strom. Kathy is also survived by her loving sisters Anne Keenan (Brian), Virginia McBride (Mark), Helen McConnell (Matt) and Barbara Vermylen (Mark), as well as dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a lifetime of cherished friends worldwide.

Kathy’s passion for travel took her to destinations worldwide with both her family and with close friends.

in Westhampton where she graciously received visits from the many family members and lifelong friends who loved her. Their devotion to Kathy was a testament to her compassion and to her genuine interest in the lives of all those she touched during her time on earth.

Kathy had a quick wit, and was a loyal friend, a loving grandmother, mother and wife, and most certainly, her parents’ favorite daughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, November 23 at Church of the Resurrection (910 Boston Post Road, Rye NY). Interment will be private.

Sag Harbor Village Police Reports for the Week of December 5

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — Village Police received a report on Thanksgiving morning that there was a possible break-in at a Hillside Drive West residence, where it appeared that the front door had been kicked in. The door was slightly ajar, the officer reported, with some damage to the frame, but the interior, which the officer noted is unsafe to enter, was unoccupied. Once and for All

There’s an irony that Southampton Town officials might have the least power when it comes to the travel plaza featuring tax-free gasoline that is going up on Shinnecock Nation property in Hampton Bays — but also might be most at fault for the current situation. Neighbors are incensed that the nation is building the gas station off Sunrise Highway with seemingly little oversight. The Environmental Protection Agency has stepped forward to provide a framework for the sovereign Shinnecock Nation’s project, but also has allowed the nation to proceed mostly on pledges to follow EPA rules. A new development with thousands ... by Editorial Board

A Do-Over

Stop digging. That’s the best advice we can offer the Southampton History Museum. When you’re in a hole, recognize it and, if you do nothing else, don’t make it deeper. And there’s a hole, and it’s deep, and it’s time to think about climbing out of it. It was foolhardy to think evicting the Conscience Point Shellfish Hatchery from the North Sea site owned by the museum, near where English settlers first landed in 1640, wasn’t going to land with a thud. Perhaps the hatchery could be a better tenant — there is fair concern about the sometimes disheveled state ... by Editorial Board
