i-tri

i-tri focuses on working with middle-school girls because research shows that the largest drop in self-esteem occurs during early adolescence. 69% of elementary school-aged girls reported being “happy the way I am.” That figure plummets to 29% for high school girls. i-tri girls learn to believe in themselves, and that can change everything. Along the journey to the finish line of a youth distance triathlon, our girls discover that they are capable, strong and brave.

The Butterfly Effect Project creates safe spaces for girls (and now boys) to dream and succeed. We empower children by giving them the tools to achieve emotionally stable and self-confident futures. We serve Eastern Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, specifically the towns of Riverhead, Brookhaven, Southold and Southampton. BEP was founded to serve girls living in downtown Riverhead and Riverside, which is the most economically distressed area on Long Island. The Butterfly Effect Project was born out of the life experiences of its founder and executive director, Tijuana Fulfold. It was through a fortuitous mentorship that Tijuana was able to break the cycle of poverty, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy that was her perceived destiny based on her community and family history. Tijuana’s experience with her mentor gave her the confidence, tools, and motivation to create a program with a mission to empower, enlighten and enhance every girl’s future’ encouraging one girl at a time by eliminating one obstacle at a time. There is no other program on Long Island specifically for young Black and Brown girls from disenfranchised communities for the purpose of addressing social and racial equity that was designed by a member of the same background who has achieved professional and personal success.
