Professional artist Deborah Buck embraces and explores the absurd and the darker side of fairy tales, while also tackling real-world issues through her art. In an Insight Sunday program at The Church on June 23, at 10:30 a.m., Buck will speak to the inspiration and processes behind her work, “A Day at the Races,” which is on view as part of The Church’s exhibition “Are You Joking? Women & Humor.” Following the in-depth look at the work, the floor will open up to a Q&A with the audience.

Join Buck in an exploration of the multidimensional planes within the interplay of surrealism and abstraction. How do topics like the marginalization of women, climate change, social injustice, gun violence, and more find themselves challenged upon canvas by the layers of characters and narratives born from surrealist automatism?

Buck has worked as an artist for 40 years. She has exhibited widely in galleries and museums and is currently represented by Jennifer Baahng Gallery in New York City. Her practice is restless, questioning, and in pursuit of visual truism. She is an ardent feminist working to reverse the marginalization of women in the arts and applauds The Church for this exhibition devoted entirely to women.

Tickets to Insight Sunday with Deborah Buck on June 23 are $10 (free for members) at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor.
