“Art is a calling,” says Audrey Flack, internationally acclaimed painter, sculptor, and pioneer of photorealism. “There is something within the artist that has to be expressed. Every creation reveals something more about the universe and about the artist.”
On Saturday, July 20, at 3 p.m., Flack will be at The Church to share her experiences with Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Bill and Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan and others as she offers her insights and excerpts from her memoir, “Audrey Flack: With Darkness Came Stars.” After the discussion, there will be a brief Q&A with the artist. Books will be available for purchase at the end of the event and can be signed by the author.
Audrey Flack was the first woman, along with Mary Cassatt, to be inducted into the historic Janson’s History of Art text. Her works are in major museums in the United States and throughout the world. She is the author of four books, including “Art & Soul” (Penguin USA 1991) and her new memoir, which has received rave reviews from The New York Times as well as a large number of readers. The memoir focuses on what really happened in the personal lives of abstract expressionists as well as dealing with two children, one of whom was severely autistic. Currently, Flack lives and works both in East Hampton and in New York City.
Tickets for the talk are $15 ($10 members) at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor. Visit thechurchsagharbor.org for details.
