I spent my younger years worshiping the sun; lifeguarding, swimming, playing tennis — rarely with proper sun protection. After one too many trips to the dermatologist, I’ve learned my lesson. These days, I’m religious about SPF and have swapped my old suits for cute, sporty swimwear that actually blocks harmful rays. And yes, I’m now that parent chasing my kids around with sunscreen yelling, “One bad sunburn is all it takes!” That’s why I’m here to say that this year’s summer swimwear isn’t just stylish, it’s smart. As awareness around sun safety grows, fashion is stepping up. Say hello to chic suits that protect your skin while turning heads.

The Rise of SPF Swimwear

Gone are the days when sun safety meant slathering on sunscreen and hiding under a towel. Should you still wear sunblock? Of course. But today’s swimwear is designed with UPF 50+ fabrics that block more than 97 percent of harmful UV rays. From lightweight rash guards to full-length swimsuits, these pieces don’t just shield your skin, they turn heads, too. Protective swimwear is made from the same stretch-friendly materials — Lycra, Nylon, Spandex — but with built-in UV protection. These technical fabrics are engineered to withstand sun, saltwater, and chlorine while offering maximum coverage without compromising comfort. I love that the newer UPF 50+ fabrics dry almost instantly. I used to dread that cold, clingy feeling of a wet bathing suit.

Style That Flatters

If you think sun-protective means shapeless, think again. Today’s long-sleeve swim tops and one-piece suits are designed with sleek, flattering cuts that highlight your shape and create beautiful silhouettes. Many even come with coordinating cover-ups, wraps, pants, and hats, making it easy to stay stylish and sun-smart. Celebrities like Anne Hathaway have been spotted in chic UPF swimwear, proving that fashion and function can absolutely go hand in hand.

Beyond Beauty

While sunscreen is essential, it has its limits, especially after swimming, sweating, or simply spending hours in the sun. Not only do protective suits block harmful UVA and UVB rays that sunscreen might miss, they also shield you from other outdoor irritants like sea lice, sandflies, and rough pool surfaces that can leave skin feeling raw and irritated. For me, the biggest bonus is that UPF swimwear helps fend off premature wrinkles, dark spots, and long-term sun damage — the kind you might not notice right away but regret later.

Hooked on Watskin

Watskin was founded by entrepreneur Lois Robbins, who lives on the South Fork and launched the brand after a personal skin cancer scare in 2018. When her dermatologist urged her to stay out of the sun, Robbins, a lifelong lover of the outdoors and fashion, realized there were few stylish options that truly protected skin. I discovered Watskin soon after and quickly became hooked. I wear the brand’s protective gear not just for swimming, but for tennis, paddle boarding and long beach walks.

Trend Watch: Modesty With Edge

Modest swimwear is also gaining momentum — think high necklines, longer hemlines, and chic cover-ups. These aren’t just practical, they’re on trend. A well-designed tankini or sleek swim dress can be as stylish as any bikini and even more empowering. So, whether you’re lounging by the pool or diving into ocean waves, invest in swimwear that loves your skin as much as you do.
