Bay Street Theater will screen the Elia Kazan directed 1951 film “A Streetcar Named Desire” on Saturday, November 2, at 7 p.m. The film is an adaptation of the Broadway play also directed by Kazan. Bay Street Theater will present a live staged version of the play as its 2024 Literature Live! production starting November 12.

The film stars Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Karl Malden and Kim Hunter. “A Streetcar Named Desire” is a powerful exploration of desire and mental fragility. It follows Blanche DuBois as she confronts her troubled past while residing with her sister, Stella, and brother-in-law, Stanley, in New Orleans. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948 and has become a timeless classic, hailed for its profound impact on American theater.

A Talkback Session with Stephen Hamilton, who will direct the Literature Live! production, and Allen O’Reilly, Bay Street’s director of education, will follow the screening.

Free performances of the upcoming play are available to all school students, teachers and administrators through Literature Live! Teachers and administrators can register their school groups at allen@baystreet.org or by calling 631-725-0818. Literature Live! is an annual BOCES-approved arts-in-education program where teachers are provided curriculum guides in advance to help with content and additional aspects of learning. Each student performance will be followed by a talkback and Q&A session with various members of the team and the audience.

Tickets for the film and Talkback are $10 at baystreet.org or 631-725-9500. Bay Street Theater is on Long Wharf in Sag Harbor.
